Solar PV & Clean Export Guarantee: 24c/kWh Microgeneration in Ireland

Published: June 15, 2026 · By Joe H. (B.Sc. Energy Engineering)

Rooftop Solar PV in Ireland has reached an unprecedented economic sweet spot. Between the €1,800 SEAI Solar Grant, 0% VAT on solar installations, and the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG), typical domestic solar systems now pay back in under 4 to 5 years.

How the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) Works

Whenever your rooftop solar array generates more electricity than your home consumes in real-time, the surplus power is automatically fed into the ESB distribution grid. Under Irish energy market rules, your electricity supplier (e.g. Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis, Energia, Yuno) is legally mandated to pay you for every exported kilowatt-hour (kWh).

☀️ 2026 Domestic Solar Numbers at a Glance:
  • Average Export Tariff: ~€0.24 / kWh cash credit
  • SEAI Grant Support: Up to €1,800 (Capped at 4kWp)
  • VAT Rate: 0% permanent zero-rating
  • Annual Export Earnings: €350 – €550 / year cash returned to homeowners

Should You Add Battery Storage?

With high CEG export rates (24c/kWh), battery storage is no longer mandatory for strong financial payback. However, pairing a 5.1 kWh battery allows you to charge on cheap night-rate electricity (e.g. 8c–10c/kWh EV tariffs) during winter months, maximizing your self-consumption.
